What you need to know about Lyndon Johnson's Reversal of John F Kennedy's Policies!
Yes, President Lyndon Johnson passed some of John F. Kennedy's civil rights policies and he moved forward with his space initiative but almost every other Domestic and Foreign policy was changed by Johnson which led to disastrous results. Let's discuss some of those changes:
1) Vietnam - With all the declassified documents that we have today there is no argument left to make, JFK was pulling the advisors out of Vietnam (there weren’t any combat troops there under JFK). NSAM 263 was JFK's withdrawal policy that was being fully implemented at the time of his death. LBJ reversed that policy the day of JFK's memorial. This led to one of the worst foreign policy disasters in U.S. history.
2) Alliance for Progress - This was JFK's way to help Latin American countries with affordable loans and grants to improve their way of life. LBJ let David Rockefeller crush this policy after JFK's death. This led to loans from World Bank and IMF juicing these countries like a loan shark from Brooklyn.
3) Middle East - JFK wanted relations with Nasser and Egypt. He didn't want the Saudi Arabian Monarchy to be our closest Middle east ally. He also did not want Israel to get atomic weapons. LBJ completely reversed all of these polices and I don't think anybody reading this article can argue the Middle East today is better off.
4) Africa - JFK was backing African Nationalist Independence everywhere. He backed Patrice Lumumba in the Congo. LBJ would go in the opposite direction and back dictators willing to hand over the rich minerals in Katanga to mining companies controlled by David Rockefeller. This led to bloody wars in the Congo and across Africa.
5) Indonesia - JFK was backing Sukarno and the Nationalists. LBJ went back to the John Foster Dulles policies of attacking Sukarno and backed Suharto which led to a bloody Coup and over a million dead. All this so Freeport Sulpher (a Rockefeller mining company) can get their hands on gold and oil. They still mine Gold there today.
6) Dominican Republic and Brazil - Just 2 more examples where JFK backed the Nationalists who believe their resources should go to their people and LBJ reversed those policies to back Military dictator regimes.
7) Federal Reserve - JFK wanted to take powers away from the Fed and give to the Comptroller of the Currency, James Saxon. He also wanted smaller banks in more communities. All of this was reversed, and Saxon was relegated to a basement office. Today the Fed has the unlimited power over our money supply that JFK was trying to remove.
8) End the Cold War - JFK was in the process of trying to end the Cold War with the Soviet Union. After negotiating a peaceful end to the Cuban Missile crisis, he realized that the Cold War must end, and he is working on a detente. LBJ would go in the other direction and the Cold War would last another 25 plus years. In fact, did it ever really end?
9) Detente with Fidel Castro and Cuba - JFK was working on a Detente with Castro. The day he was killed, a French journalist who JFK used as a backchannel was with Castro trying to negotiate. Like Castro predicted everything changed after JFK's death and LBJ went in the other direction.
10) Overhaul of the CIA - JFK fired Allen Dulles and then wanted to totally overhaul the CIA and use his brother Robert to do it. After his death, LBJ went back to handing the CIA a blank check with no oversight as they continued their assassination and regime change programs all over the world.
There is no doubt that LBJ and JFK did not see eye to eye on many issues so the next time someone tries to tell you that LBJ continued JFK's policies tell them the truth! JFK was a peace president and a backer of independence and Nationalists and LBJ was a war hawk beholden to power brokers like David Rockefeller.
